23rd June 2013
I am writing to inform you that I will be stepping down from the position of Senior Leader at C3 Church Thirroul with the agreement of the Eldership Board. This will officially take place in February 2014. I have not taken this decision lightly. I have given it much thought and prayer and have been working towards this for some time.
Brendan & Kristy Elliott will be the new Senior Leaders and will be taking over the position with the support of the Eldership and Staff. Marie and I have been preparing them for this task for over 5 years and have been impressed with their leadership and are expectant that they will take the church to the next level. They have grown up in our congregation and have been serving faithfully for many years in leadership and ministry of our Thirroul congregation. Until I hand over the leadership to Brendan and Kristy, they will receive professional coaching in various aspects of leading a church.
My employment with this congregation commenced in 1991 and in 1999 I became the Senior Leader after a church split and was thrown into a very difficult situation with many hurting people. I have been the Senior Leader for past 13 years and during this time our congregation has doubled in size. Our church has joined the C3 Movement and purchased our building which is valued at approximately $2M with only $150K owing. On a personal level, Marie and I are blessed to have our children and grandchildren as a part of the church family.
I have little emotional energy left for staying in the position and have had a professional counsellor inform me that I am suffering from early stages of burnout and am in need of an extended rest. There are also other health issues that are work related but none of these things are the reason for my decision. I really feel the time is right to pass on the baton and I’d rather do it when the church is in a healthy season.
Our plan is that after handing the leadership to Brendan and Kristy next February, Marie and I will take approximately 6 months off so Brendan and Kristy can establish their leadership. After this time we will return to the church and serve under them. Brendan has offered me work in a professional capacity with the church but I have decided to take a ‘wait and see’ approach. I’m not discounting being involved in more ministry work in other places after my rest. I have made this decision with the full support and encouragement of my wife.
Marie and I think the people that attend our church are the best. We hope we can continue to be friends over the coming years although we realise the dynamic of our relationship will change. We want to thank you all for the love and support that you have shown us over the years.
It has been a real honour to serve you all.
