Prayer and fasting can shape our future as a nation! This is why we regularly encourage you to pray and act, in relation to current issues in our society.
During the National Day of Prayer & Fasting in the Great Hall in Canberra on 2 March some resources were given to participants who were willing to commit themselves to the 40 Days of Prayer & Fasting from 5 March to 13 April. Included in this package was Derek Prince’s classic book, Shaping History Through Prayer and Fasting published in 1973.
In this book, outlined here, Derek Prince shows how God uses prayer and fasting to shape a nation with stories from the Bible, history and personal experiences. In regard to governments he wrote these thrilling, yet sobering words, “God has made it possible for Christians by their prayers to insure good government. Christians who fail to exercise this God-given authority are gravely delinquent – both toward God and toward their countries.”
During the 40 Days we prayed for the revival and transformation of Australia with a special focus on the renewal of sexual purity across our land.
Sue Tinworth of Partners in Prayer and Evangelism and coordinator of the 40 Days of Prayer & Fasting wrote on Day 41, “The momentum evident by the increase in the numbers involved in 2014 has been really encouraging! This year about 10,000 Australians prayed through the daily devotions so partnering in God’s transformation of our nation!”
So here, with thanks to God, we continue where Good News Update 93 left off with some reports of what happened in the final two weeks of the 40 Days.
Day 28 (31 March)– Australian Christian Channel TV airs the new DVD ‘Deeper’, the historic story of the National Day of Prayer and Fasting when Christians prayed that this nation would fulfill its prophetic destiny as the Great South Land of the Holy Spirit.
Day 33 (5 April)– The WA Senate election is re-run with professing Christian, Joe Bullock, whose election was declared void in February, being re-elected.
Day 36 (9 April)– Channel 10’s The Project airs a 5-minute report on Porn Addiction featuring Jason Huxley founder of Guilty Pleasure who attended the National Day of Prayer and Fasting.
But God’s answers to our prayers are not confined to the 40 Days. We believe all the prayers offered up to God for Australia have a significant on-going effect. Perhaps we can illustrate this with a parable of Jesus where he said,
“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough” (Matthew 13:33).
Day 41 (14 April)– Brian Harradine, who represented Tasmania for 30 years and became known as the “father of the Senate”, dies at the age of 79 leaving behind a Christian legacy of his courageous stance to protect the unborn and against pornography. He was farewelled with a state funeral on 23 April.
Day 44 (17 April)– Mike Baird, a strong Christian, is elected by his party as the new Premier for NSW after the spectacular demise and resignation of Barry O’Farrell the day before. He is known to his colleagues as a thoroughly decent and principled person and his nomination went unchallenged. Mike Baird’s Christian values are reflected in his conscience voting as seen in this table of NSW MPs.
Days 43 to 52 (16-25 April)– Prince William and Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with nine month-old baby George visit Australia enjoying beautiful sunny weather. The Royal Visititinerary included Easter Sunday church service in Sydney where they signed the First Fleet Bible. On their last day they were shown on national TV singing a hymn at the Dawn ANZAC Day serviceat the War Memorial in Canberra.
Day 52 (25 April)– Hundreds of thousands of Australians at home and abroad gathered to mark ANZAC Day services with record attendances. Services broadcast on TV in Australian cities, Gallipoli in Turkey and Villers-Bretonneux in France, remain distinctly Christian with prayers offered in the name of Jesus. Amazing Grace was sung at Gallipoli this year!
All these, we believe, are indicators that God is at work using the prayer and fasting of His people to shape Australia. So we are encouraged to continue to cry out to God for our nation.
To spur us on in this, former politician, Alasdair Webster, remarked about his friend Brian Harradine’s love for the following Bible verse which he continously repeated and practised.
“Let us not be weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up!”
In particular, please continue to pray that God’s justice and mercy will prevail through the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse now in WA. Thank you.
Yours for the shaping of Australia through prayer and fasting,
David Rowsome and Warwick Marsh
