Pray and Fast for REVIVAL and Sexual Purity
The year 2014 is off to an exciting start!
Last week it was our joy to invite your participation in National Christian Heritage Sunday on 2 February 2014. Now we invite you to participate in the National Day of Prayer and Fasting on 2 March
2014 followed by the 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting during Lent from 5 March to 13 April 2014.
The idea of gathering together in Canberra for a day of prayer and fasting came about as some leaders got on their knees before God. This was during a Strategic Prayer Consultation of the Canberra Declaration in Parliament House on 28 February 2011. There was a sense of urgency to call the nation to pray and fast in response to the imminent introduction of same-sex ‘marriage’ in Australia. God has answered the prayers of the first National Day of Prayer and Fasting held on 24 July 2011.
Now we are looking forward to the fourth National Day of Prayer and Fasting. This year the theme will be REVIVAL. The most recent National Census shows a further drop of 2.8% in those who call themselves Christians in Australia from 63.9% in 2006 to 61.1% in 2011. However only 8.8% attend church weekly. At the same time, we are seeing many of the Judeo-Christian values which have made Australia a great place to live, being undermined on many different fronts. Therefore, as highlighted in this short video, we will be praying for the REVIVAL and transformation of Australia with a special focus on sexual purity.

True revival begins as God’s people renew their love for Him. It is then that we want to share the Gospel with others. That is why each year our focus is for people to come to Christ through personal prayer-based evangelism. Jesus Christ is the answer! When people hear the Good News of God’s love in Jesus Christ from their friends, who are praying for them, their hearts are touched. Many find new life in Christ as a result.
We need to see an explosion of church growth to reverse the present decline. This happened in Australia in 1902 starting in Melbourne and again in 1959 through the Billy Graham Crusades.
To stem the tide of sexual immorality that is flooding our society, educational programs and tougher laws are clearly not enough. We need a change of heart. We need to cry out to God and ask Him to reverse this trend. Pornography, promiscuity, adultery, rape, paedophilia, sexual abuse of children, sex-tourism, sex-trafficking, prostitution and other immoral behaviour mentioned in the Scriptures, are increasingly prevalent in our society. The good news is that REVIVAL in the Church leads to transformation in the nation.
The Organising Team are asking that as many as possible observe the National Day of Prayer and Fasting in Canberra or in their own church settings or other suitable venues. Please take a moment to view this inspiring video from three prominent church leaders.

For the National Day of Prayer and Fasting there will be a Prayer Service in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra between 10am and 4pm on Sunday 2 March, 2014. We invite you to attend and be amongst the 1,000 Christians expected to gather. A live webcast from the Great Hall will make it possible for other gatherings or individuals across Australia to link in also.
The 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting will take place during Lent, from Ash Wednesday 5 March to Palm Sunday 13 April 2014. During the 40 Days participants are asked to set some time aside each day as individuals, families, small groups etc. to pray and fast, as they are led, following this prayer plan.
Five Point Prayer Plan – REVIVAL
-
Commit to a deepening and overflowing love for God (1 John 4:16).
-
Make a list of friends you will pray for on each of these 40 days, praying they will be revived from death to new life in Jesus Christ. As God leads, invite them to encounter the life of Jesus at an Easter service.
-
Include these 40 Days of Prayer in your church calendar and mobilise your church to pray and partner with God in His revival of our nation.
-
Live a sexually pure, holy life by grace and the power of a personal relationship with God and pray for a revival of sexual purity in our nation (1 John 3:3, 2 Cor 6:16-7:1).
-
Pray each day for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and fire to unite us in prayer and partnership with God in His revival and transformation of Australia (Acts 2:17).
For the 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting, prominent Australians from different spheres of influence have prepared devotions that will help us to reflect on, claim, and act on 40 Biblical promises for our nation. We will invite Jesus to come and transform different aspects of Aussie life! We have produced a 5 min video clip on how to fast for 40 days by doing a Daniel Fast. Most people can do a Daniel Fast and what’s more it is good for your health. Watch the video here. For more information, watch this 5 min explanation of a Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory.
