Since 2010 the Canberra Declaration has been drawing together a growing community of Australian Christians who are willing to take a stand for Christian values in Australia. With all that is happening in our nation we feel a greater sense of urgency in calling more Australians to join the battle. Our aim is to double the number of signees to the Canberra Declaration from 50,000 to 100,000 by our fifth anniversary on 23 July 2015.
The Word of God says, “if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?”
(1 Corinthians 14:8). Please pray with us that the Canberra Declaration will be a trumpet that sounds a clear call to protectFreedom of Religion, Marriage and Family and the Sanctity of Human Life in Australia.
Nehemiah’s use of a trumpet in rebuilding the broken down walls of Jerusalem provides us with an inspiring example. When the wall had reached half its height Nehemiah experienced some serious opposition. In response, Nehemiah records that “we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat” (Nehemiah 4:9). When the situation continued to worsen, Nehemiah had half of the men building with weapons at their side while the other half were fully armed and at the ready.
At this crucial time Nehemiah said, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!” (Nehemiah 4:19b,20). Like a trumpet the Canberra Declaration can call us together to pray and act always looking to our God to go before us.
With God’s help, the work of the Canberra Declaration is to –
speak out on the issues of our day based on the truth of God’s Word.
encourage those who have signed the Canberra Declaration to write letters and visit or make submissions to our leaders in government.
mobilise prayer and fasting for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for the revival and transformation of Australia in order to reach its destiny.
work alongside other Christian organizations of whom are signatories to the Canberra Declaration.
Nehemiah can inspire us in other ways as well. When Nehemiah first felt burdened for the situation in Jerusalem, he responded with prayer and fasting. This miraculously opened the way for him to leave Babylon with letters from the king and an army escort for safe conduct. Upon his arrival in Jerusalem he immediately inspected the broken down wall and sized up the situation. Only then did he gather the leaders and people and announce his plan. God’s gracious hand was upon him. The wall that had been in ruins for 70 years was rebuilt in 52 days!
