A Catholic hospital in Poland has ceased committing abortions after all doctors at the hospital signed a clause opting out based on conscience. Abortions at the Hospital were first exposed by midwife Agata Rejman in 2014 at an emotional press conference where she discussed her traumatic experiences at the hospital. The hospital did not deny committing abortions, but shortly after the press conference threatened Rejman with a lawsuit. The hospital manager sent her a letter accusing her of damaging the reputation of the clinic. He demanded retraction of “false statements,” that the hospital “kills children.” He also demanded that she pay approximately 17,000 USD) to a children’s hospice or face legal action. Ultimately, the lawsuit against Rejman did not happen, and she found another job.

Local pro-lifers were shocked by the hospital’s treatment of Rejman and by the abortions that took place there, especially since the local bishop had blessed the facility during an opening ceremony in 2011. Adding to their shock was the fact that abortion is considered rare in Poland, since it is illegal except in three cases. Local pro-lifers quickly responded to Rejman’s call for help. Jacek Kotula, an activist from The Right to Life Foundation vowed to organize protests if the hospital did not stop its practices. He kept his word. But after dozens of pickets in front of the hospital and in other places, he found himself in trouble. After one demonstration, the police confiscated big posters of unborn babies put along with the photos of Pro-Familia doctors. Soon after, the hospital sued him and another activist, Przemysław Sycz.

The lawsuits were filed in both criminal and civil courts and alleged that the activists were disseminating false information when they equated abortion with killing. The hospital claimed that the activists had generated negative publicity in the media and harmed the hospital’s business. The criminal case ended up clearing the defendants from wrongdoing. However, the civil case went in the opposite direction. The accused hope that the Supreme Court will eventually repeal the verdict of the lower court. “The lawsuits did not scare away the activists,” said Mariusz Dzierżawski from the Right to Life Foundation, adding that they bought a billboard close to the hospital informing the public about abortion. “One of the pickets was recently televised by the Polish public television,” he added.

And now the activists can proclaim their victory, even if their legal problems are not fully resolved. The hospital stopped performing abortions because all the gynaecologists working there signed a conscience clause. The hospital director Radosław Skiba confirmed that they no longer perform abortions. He explained that the facility works with the local perinatal hospice and offers professional help to each family. He claimed that the change had nothing to do with the actions of the Right to Life Foundation. Catholic portal gave the pro-lifers its due credit, but also wrote that the issue is more complex. The reason for the change is associated with the 2015 decision of the Constitutional Court giving doctors the right to sign the conscience clause.

There has been a seven-fold rise in the persecution of Christians in China since 2008, according to a report by a partner of UK-based Release International. The report claims China is seeking ‘complete control over the nation’s churches’ with the aim of replacing ‘Christ as the head of the church with submission to the Communist Party’. To that end, China has increased its crackdown on Christians and churches, especially house churches. ‘Our partners China Aid have meticulously documented attacks against Christians and churches in China,’ says Paul Robinson, Chief executive of Release, which serves persecuted Christians worldwide. ‘They have found that religious persecution, especially of house church Christians, is increasing in severity. They document a seven-fold rise in persecution since 2008.

Last October, the UK hosted a state visit by the Chinese Premier. Release urges David Cameron to use his developing relationship with Xi Jinping to press for full religious freedom in China and an end to persecution. In all conscience, Britain cannot put trade before human rights. China has a long history of attempting to bring the rapidly growing church under the control of the atheist state. Since the downturn in the Chinese economy, which has revealed yawning inequalities, the state has been cracking down on churches, Christians and others for fear of unrest. This includes the arrest of Christian human rights lawyers for mounting a legal campaign against the tearing down of hundreds of Christian crosses from churches.

China Aid has documented an increase in persecution of 4.74 per cent in the past year. Over the last nine years the arrest and harassment of Christians in China has been rising. Persecution rates are now 709.94 per cent worse than in 2008. And while fewer Christians are being sent to jail, more are being harassed, beaten and even tortured, the report claims. In one province alone, Zheijang, the Release partner has independently verified that ‘by the end of 2015, more than 20 churches had been forcibly demolished, 1,300 crosses removed, more than 500 Christians taken into police custody, at least 130 Christians physically injured, more than 60 Christians administratively or criminally detained, and at least 28 pastors and Christians arrested or charged with a crime.’

Churches have been closed and in some areas Christians have taken to worshipping in the open-air under the eye of the authorities. ‘Release urges Christians around the world to stand in solidarity with our Chinese brothers and sisters, and those in other nations where churches have been demolished,’ says Paul Robinson of Release. ‘We’re encouraging Christians everywhere to pray for and remember our Christian brothers and sisters who are being forced out of their churches.’ Through its international network of missions Release serves persecuted Christians in 30 countries around the world, by supporting pastors and Christian prisoners, and their families; supplying Christian literature and Bibles, and working for justice. Release is a member of the UK organisations Global Connections and the Evangelical Alliance.

The slippery slope is slicker than we thought—and it could land Bible-believing Christians into a cold, dark jail cell. At least in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a troubling statement on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. I agree, as he says, that everyone deserves to live free of stigma, persecution and discrimination. I agree, as he says, that all people—regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—have the right to feel safe and secure, and empowered to freely express themselves. God gave us all a free will. But that’s about where my agreement ends. I am all for legal rights—but not special rights. I am all for ending hate speech—but the Bible is not hate speech.

“As a society, we have taken many important steps toward recognizing and protecting the legal rights for the LGBTQ2 community—from enshrining equality rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to the passage of the Civil Marriage Act. There remains much to be done, though. Far too many people still face harassment, discrimination and violence for being who they are. This is unacceptable,” Trudeau says. “To do its part, the government of Canada today will introduce legislation that will help ensure transgender and other gender-diverse people can live according to their gender identity, free from discrimination and protected from hate propaganda and hate crimes.”

This bill will most certainly lead to persecution, discrimination and perhaps even jail time. It could also encourage violence against those who don’t embrace the LGBT lifestyle Here’s a summary of the bill: “This bill amends the Canadian Human Rights Act to add gender identity and gender expression to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination. The enactment also amends the Criminal Code to extend protection against hate propaganda set out in that Act to any section of the public that is distinguished by gender identity, and to clearly set out that if an offence was motivated by bias or hate based on gender identity, a court must take that into consideration when it imposes a sentence.” It doesn’t take a prophet to see where this is headed. Christians need to speak up now before it’s too late.

Christian women and girls can face abuse in Pakistan because of mixed marriages. Maryam Mushtaq, accompanied by Romail, her 11-year-old brother, was walking home from a college in Lahore on a sunny afternoon, when suddenly she was brutally accosted. Two masked men jumped out of a white Corolla and grabbed the kicking and screaming girl, forcing her into the back of the car. The abductors shouted abuse and threats at Romail as he rushed home to tell his mother. Frantic, Maryam’s mother filed a police report of Maryam’s kidnapping. Two days later the police informed her that her daughter had not been kidnapped, but rather had married a Muslim man, Muhammad Ali, who produced a marriage certificate. Her faith was listed as Muslim. Maryam is a dedicated Christian woman weekly worshipping with her family.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. 18 such incidents were reported in Punjab province of Pakistan during the months of April-May 2016. In all cases, the girls were Christians, forced to convert to Islam and given as sex slaves to influential Muslim men. Four of the 18 women were already married to Christian husbands and had children. According to a ruling of the Lahore High Court, “Christian marriages do not dissolve on conversion to Islam or any religion.” The Constitution of Pakistan protects the Christian Marriage Act, but in spite of the ruling of the court, powerful Muslim clerics claim otherwise: “After conversion to Islam, the previous marriage stands null and void…,” a convenient loophole protecting accused kidnappers. These crimes cry out for justice!

Let’s Pray for:

*   the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Pakistan Constitution to be upheld by the courts and enforced by the police.

*   God’s protection of these kidnapped women and supernatural deliverance from their captors just as Paul and Silas experienced and for the fear of the Lord, mighty in battle, to overtake those kidnapping women and children

*    the kidnapped Christians to remain faithful to God and to cry out for His deliverance.

For all the justifiable press coverage of Barack Obama’s federal guidance on transgender students in public schools, its most dangerous provision has largely gone unnoticed. The most outrageous provision of his transgender bathroom order does not even involve locker rooms, where teenagers of the opposite sex will change and shower next to one another. The most offensive part of the new policy is that, under the Obama administration’s federal guidance: School districts must allow biological males and females to spend the night together in the same hotel room on field trips; Colleges must let men who say they are transgender be roommates with one or more women; and School officials cannot even tell those young women or their parents in advance that their new roommate is a man, without risking a federal lawsuit.

The wording of the Obama administration’s edict is clear, yet it has not been reported, even by conservative news outlets. Since the Obama administration announced the federal guidance, several elected officials have said that its definition of a “transgender” person is vague. That’s absolutely wrong. The eight-page letter clearly states that, as far as the Department of Education are concerned, a student becomes a member of the opposite sex the moment he feels like it. The instant he tells school officials about his decision, they must immediately treat him accordingly. “When a student or their parent or guardian, notifies the school that the student will assert a gender identity that differs from previous representations, the school will begin treating the student consistent with the student’s gender identity,” the letter says.

As many as 500 top evangelical and social conservative leaders will have a closed-door meeting with Donald Trump on June 21 in New York City to ascertain what he has to offer to the country. “Our goal is to be able to have a conversation that could lead to a better understanding of what Donald Trump has to offer to the country,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. Trump has agreed to meet with the evangelical and social conservative leaders which was arranged by staff who formally worked with former Republican candidate Ben Carson, who has now endorsed Trump. Trump does not profess to be a Christian, but God can work His purposes through any human instrument. Pray for divine wisdom to be given to those who will attend the meeting.

United Methodist delegates have voted 445 to 310 to repeal the denomination’s 40-year-old official resolution supporting legal abortion. Paired with an earlier vote to withdraw from the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), the church took “two major steps in the right direction,” tweeted John Lomperis, a director at the Institute on Religion and Democracy. The Book of Resolutions statement in support of legal abortion was adopted in 1976. Give thanks for faithful Christians in the United Methodist Church (UMC) who remain committed to biblical values and vote accordingly. Give thanks for victories that clearly represent Bible-based convictions on the “humanness” and sanctity of unborn children. In other areas, the UMC is slipping away from its biblical foundations. Pray for a return to God’s Word.
