Jesus was telling the crowds a parable about a sower scattering seeds, when the disciples changed the subject and asked privately why he spoke in picture language.
He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. Matt 13: 11-13
Jesus was driving a wedge into the crowds who came to listen.
The wedge was how the ‘secrets’ or mysteries of Jesus’ other world, his Father’s kingdom, would be received.
His kingdom messages were to be received with the heart, not so much the head. That’s why the kingdom belonged to the children, the ordinary people.
Jesus described the human soul as being like different kinds of soil. The soils would respond differently to the seeds of the message of the kingdom.
The secrets of the kingdom of God need a place in a hungry heart to take root, to grow and to bear fruit.
Let’s find ourselves talking about the kingdom of God with all our heart like Jesus did; it was his favourite topic!
