Preparing for Persecution
Learning from history:
Persecution has been a fact of life for Christians all through history. It began with Jesus, his disciples, and continues with those who would follow.
Currently over 200 million Christians worldwide experience high, very high or extreme persecution (Christianity Today). Statistics tell us that more Christians have been martyred for their faith in the 20th century than all 18 centuries previously, combined.
Hard times does not mean that Jesus is not on the throne.
What to expect:
Persecution will happen
Persecution hurts, really hurts
Healthy churches can go underground seamlessly
Methods and programmes become less important
Real estate may go by the wayside
Believers won’t loose faith, hope, love or joy
Conversations about our rights are fruitless, we don’t have any
Politics and current affairs hold no surprises
Bemoaning the past wastes valuable worship, Bible and prayer time

Christians do not retaliate, but continue to speak the truth in love

The strong get stronger, the weak get weaker
Evangelism continues
Prayer becomes more real and more urgent
Miracles continue amongst the suffering and pain
Have a plan:
Even in seasons of growth, keep an eye on the times
Don’t be indignant or surprised when things take a turn for the worst
Get the church used to small group activity
Equip people to lead and continue without paid staff
Manage debt and property
Explore different models of church
“We have been given the privilege to host this presence. The Holy Spirit is inme for my sake but he is upon me for yours.”

State of play in the SSM debate:
The Catholic Church calls for prayer and fasting till the completion of voting.
The Sydney Diocese of the Anglican Church donate $1M to the Coalition for Marriage
Many people still haven’t voted
The ‘rainbow activists’:
Step 1 destroy God’s model for marriage
Step 2 go for the children
Step 3 outlaw opposition
Mark Latham: Same-Sex yes vote will open a can of worms
Editor’s Note: This article by Mark Latham shows the minefield that the legislation of “any two people” getting married will unleash on the children and the families of Australia.
There are just so many causes and social issues for us to worry about.
This is the time to focus on the Kingdom of God invading our own space, and any other space we take responsibility for. Nothing beats being a light.
