1. Report on the seminar to address the implications of changing the definition of marriage.

Senior Illawarra Christian leaders led a seminar, attended by around 50 leaders in Wollongong to address this issue. Below is a summary of points presented.

Politics is now speaking into the moral and religious domains. We must learn from history.
There is a bigger agenda behind the definition of marriage. It’s becoming a human rights issue and will not stop at the church’s door.
The definition of discrimination will ultimately include the gospel message which will be defined as ‘hate speech.

There are are implications to funding for church based institutions such as schools, hospitals, welfare etc.
The events of the previous week with open conflict between the Mercury and the Catholic Church is a picture of things to come. The media may be against us, but God is for us.

People are trying to do the right thing, but (it seems there is) a sinister thing undermining the very foundation of our society

Jesus prayed the “great unanswered prayer” of John 17 for unity in the church.
If we want to be heard, we must be heard as one voice.
Christians are retreating, the church is overwhelmed, leaders are overwhelmed, we don’t have the language. Church folk are not coping.
Maybe it’s time we talked about politics from the pulpit.
The church is entering into a time of disconnect with society.

We need a shift in language and get away from simplistic slogans. Speak from not just a Christian perspective, but from an Aussie point of view where we all have a right to freedom of speech.

Turn our personal conversations to Jesus and the cross. At the cross, we have to lay down our rights to be anything other than what God wants us to be.

It’s now more about ideology than truth.

We are to love those who are different to us.

Time: Arrive 7:00pm for 7:30pm presentation

Venue: Xavier Centre in the old primary school at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, 36 Harbour Street Wollongong

Same sex ‘marriage’ would mean:

a. Loss of our freedoms – those who oppose SSM including teachers, health workers, parents, ministers of religion and others may be prosecuted under anti-discrimination law.

b. Gender ideology imposed on all of us with implications for work places, schools and public spaces.

Please invite others to attend – your help is greatly appreciated.

3. “First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak out for me”
