Karin became a Christian in 1983, and lives in Bondi Beach with her husband of 23 years and two children. She started her working life as a racehorse track rider, left the racing industry to work in insurance, and subsequently took degrees in archaeology. She holds a PhD in Egyptian archaeology, is a widely published scholar, and has worked on archaeological projects in Australia, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. She was also curator at the Nicholson Museum of Archaeology (University of Sydney) for nine years.
An interest in politics during the 1980s culminated in a period of service as a Federal Senator for the Australian Democrats in the Australian Commonwealth Parliament from 1991-93. She was the youngest woman to sit in Federal Parliament and was her party’s spokesperson for Education, Industry, Science and Youth Affairs. In 1993, she lost the seat in the Federal election, and established her own political consulting business, Capitol Research, a boutique corporate communications firm.
Since then, Karin has also served on many committees of the Sydney Diocese of the Anglican Church, including the Standing Committee, Synod and the Social Issues Executive, the Diocesan public affairs think-tank. She is Chief Executive Officer of Anglican Deaconess Ministries Limited. Karin is still active in archaeology as a research scholar and field archaeologist, and also teaches ‘Archaeology and the Bible’ at Mary Andrews College.
